the speciality in the relationship between Xena and
Gabrielle. The file is kind of big because the visual
quality was very important this time (it's a slide

a little playing around. On that legendary night at
the "Roxy" in L.A. when Lucy Lawless gave
her first concert for her fans, she sang Bonnie Raitt's
"Something to talk about" - and everybody
in the audience knew who she was talking
about. While she was singing a lot of scenes from
"X:WP" appeared before my inner eye and
when I was back in Germany I only needed to put it
all together. So this is what I saw :). |
Nur
eine kleine Spielerei: Ich war verrückt genug,
nach L.A. zu einer Xena Convention zu fliegen und
war ziemlich unerwartet vor Ort in einer inzwischen
geradezu legendären Nacht im "Roxy",
wo Lucy Lawless eine beeindruckende Performance für
ihre Fans hingelegt hat. Um aber zum Punkt zu kommen:
Als Lucy Lawless augenzwinkernd Bonnie Raitts "Something
to talk about" sang, war das dazugehörige
Video quasi schon in meinem Kopf. Ich musste es nur
noch schneiden ;). |

Another
experiment. It's my first approach to the character
Xena and her way. This video is dedicated to Judy
who said about the show Xena: Warrior Princess "I
never watched it from 1995-2001 because I thought
it was a show about war and violence. Can you imagine
my surprise (...) to discover it was about love and
peace." Judy's words inspired me to make this
video. I chose a very unusual music, and I'm not sure
you'll like it. I love that piece and I also found
the lyrics quite fitting: The words are from the famous
song of love from the New Testament (1 Corinthians
13). The lyrics are sung in Greek, that's why I subtitled
the video.
Warning: The length of the video is 5.40 min. Besides,
you'll probably have to pump up the volume. (And:
the video includes a few scenes from FIN.) |
Mal
wieder ein Experiment: Meine erste Annäherung
an die Figur Xena und ihren Weg - begonnen in der
Parallelserie 'Hercules' und vollendet in der sechsten
Staffel, die in Deutschland immer noch nicht gezeigt
wurde (zu lesbisch, nehme ich an). Das große
Thema der Serie, die Liebe, habe ich versucht abzubilden,
in dem ich auf eine ungewöhnliche Musik zurückgegriffen
habe, deren Worte auf dem sogenannten "Hohelied
der Liebe" aus dem neuen Testament beruhen. Der
Songtext ist in griechisch, daher habe ich das Video
mit englischen Untertiteln versehen. Wenn man von
der Serie nur wenig gesehen hat, ist das Video schwer
zu verstehen.
Achtung: Das Video ist 5.40 min. lang. Außerdem
müsst Ihr vermutlich die Lautstärke etwas
aufdrehen. |

This is a FIN video (!).
Not that I like the conclusion TPTB chose for the
end of the series, I don't. But everyone has a different
strategy to deal with it. While most people seem to
avoid the finale, I decided to make a video. Although
extremely debatable these two episodes are beautifully
made and the performances of the two actresses are
breathtaking. I would have given Reneé O'Connor
an Emmy for her performance in FIN but who's asking
me.
Btw, I'm convinced Xena will find a way back to life
and to Gabrielle. The reason for her death was just
too stupid and soulmates belong together anyway.
What FIN (and this video) is about:
It's about a warrior who FINally gets her redemption,
about a girl from Poteidaia who FINally becomes a
true warrior, and a love that overcomes death.

Nicht, dass ich der Aussage des Finales inhaltlich zustimme,
das tue ich nicht. Aber die beiden Folgen enhalten wunderschöne,
poetische Bilder und die schauspielerische Leistung
beider Akteurinnen ist herausragend. Ich hätte
Reneé O'Connor sofort einen Emmy gegeben, aber
mich fragt ja niemand.
Meiner Meinung nach findet Xena kurz nach der letzten
Folge einen Weg zurück ins Leben und zu Gabrielle.
Der Grund für ihren Tod war einfach zu albern und
Seelengefährtinnen gehören sowieso zusammen.
Worum es in dem Finale (und dem Video) geht:
Es geht um eine schuldbeladene Kriegerin, die endlich
ihre ersehnte Erlösung erlangt, um eine junge Frau
aus Poteidaia, die ihre Bestimmung in diesem Leben findet,
und um eine Liebe, die den Tod überdauert. |

This
website is dedicated to different kinds of lesbian
culture, lesbian FanArt is part of that. The Xenafandom
is known as one of the most creative TV show fandoms
of all time. Maybe it's because of the creativity
of the series itself, maybe it's because there's so
much visual opulence in the show.
In the first place though, this series is a milestone
(as well as 'Buffy') for lesbian characters on TV,
since it built the brigde between invisibilty and
visibility of lesbians on TV. However, it still wasn't
possible to say 'it' and to show 'it'. But X:WP was
the reason why other TV shows finally could say it
and could show it. Nonetheless the subtext was the
reason why so many lesbian viewers felt a need to
make the sexual element in the relationship between
Xena and Gabrielle visible.
In this video several sorts of artwork are shown:

Diese
Website ist Formen lesbischer Kultur gewidmet, lesbische
FanArt ist ein Teil davon. Das
Xenafandom gilt als eine der kreativsten Fangemeinden
aller Zeiten. Dies mag daran liegen, dass die Serie
selbst vor kreativen Einfällen nur so strotzt
und vielleicht auch an ihrer Bildgewaltigkeit.
Vor allem aber ist die Serie Xena für Lesben
so bedeutsam, weil sie (zusammen mit 'Buffy') die
Brücke von der Unsichtbarkeit in die Sichtbarkeit
von Lesben im Fernsehen geschlagen hat. Und dennoch
war es noch nicht Zeit, 'es' auszusprechen, der
letzte Schritt war noch nicht getan. Umso größer
war und ist folglich das Bedürfnis lesbischer
Zuschauerinnen zu zeigen, was in der Serie nicht
sein darf, und herauszustellen, was sein darf.
In diesem Video werden verschiedene Formen von FanArt
dargestellt: Zeichnungen, Gemälde, Fotomontagen,
Wallpaper, Collagen, Comics, Fanfic Covers und Covers
der sogenannten Virtuellen Subtext Staffeln. Es
ist allen Künstlerinnen gewidmet, die ihre
Werke mit anderen ZuschauerInnen teilen.

Some people still think there's nothing going on between
Xena and Gabrielle - a mystery to me, especially in
view of the wonderful "When Fates collide"
episode, written by Katherine Fugate. This video is
a tribute to that episode, so it includes (among others)
some scenes from WFC.
We have a special music genre in Germany which is
called 'Schlager'. Usually it's not an appropriate
genre for a Xena music vid, but for some reason I
had to do it - maybe because the lyrics fit so well
and because it makes a difference when women sing
Schlager especially for women. Anyway, it's kitsch,
so don't say you haven't been warned. |

Aus mir rätselhaften Gründen gehen manche
Xena-ZuschauerInnen immer noch davon aus, das Xena
und Gabrielle keine Beziehung miteinander haben, Subtext
hin, Subtext her. Spätestens nach der romantischen
"When Fates collide" Folge, geschrieben
von Katherine Fugate, hätten diese Zweifel eigentlich
ausgeräumt sein müssen. Diese Musikvideo
ist eine Hommage an diese Folge - die unglückseligerweise
im deutschen Fernsehen noch nicht gesendet wurde.
Ohne Kenntnis der Folge ist das Video leider schwieriger
zu verstehen, aber es enthält auch Szenen aus

people emailed me that they liked the first 'Quote
video', so I made a second one. Again you'll find
quotes from actors, writers, directors and producers
of the show. The quotes are from DVD commentaries,
interviews, coffee talks and conventions, and all
of them are about the X/G relationship and about subtext.
The
music I chose is again Loreena McKennitt's 'Tango
to Evora', but this time I picked the version from
Haris Alexiou, a wonderful singer from Greece. Since
Xena and Gabrielle were supposed to be Greek, and
considering the beauty of this language, I thought
greek lyrics would fit. |

What this clip is about:
Last week someone said to me that the show 'Xena'
will live on forever and that people still would watch
it in a hundred years. I doubt that and tried to imagine
how watching the show would feel like in the year
2075. This clip is about this theory. I'm afraid that
other people don't find this video nearly as funny
as I found it when I made it. Anyway, I had a great
time, hehe.

würden die Trickeffekte und die Technik im Jahre

A man dressed as a woman changes the lyrics of a
heterosexual song into lesbian lyrics and sings
about Xena. Nice idea. I couldn't resist to add
some Xena scenes to the wonderful performance Alexis
Arquette ("Caligula") gave on the Xena
Convention in Burbank. So here's a music video.
I'm not sure but I believe that this clip is my
first "fencesitter" music video. Nobody
really stood a chance next to Gabrielle (hey, I'm
a subber, remember?) but Xena's list of seduced
men (and women) is quite impressive.
Bad boys, powerful warlords and even gods succumb
to the charme of the warrior princess. I guess if
Don Giovanni's Leporello had lived in the Xenaverse
he would have song his aria about Xena, not about
Don Giovanni. Of course Xena serves only the Greater
Good, but she doesn't look bored when she tries
to do good deeds, does she? However, when she kisses
Gabrielle it's not for the Greater Good but only
true love.

Da konnte ich nicht widerstehen, ein paar Szenen aus
der Serie drüberzulegen.
Doch obwohl es sich angeboten hätte, ein rein
lesbisches Video zu erstellen, habe ich ein paar der
vielen (heterosexuellen) Verführungen, die Xena
in all den Jahren durchgezogen hat, mit in das Video
integriert. Menschen, die Küsse zwischen Frau
und Mann eklig finden, seien also gewarnt (Ha! So
einen Disclaimer wollte ich immer schon mal schreiben,
ich finde es so lächerlich (oder traurig, je
nachdem), wenn Lesben in den USA vor ihre Werke eine
Warnung setzten).
Böse Buben, mächtige Feldherrn und selbst
Götter erliegen dem Charme der Kriegerprinzessin.
Wenn Don Giovannis Diener Leporello im Xenaverse gelebt
hätte, dann hätte er seine Arie auf Don
Giovanni, sondern auf Xena gesungen. Natürlich
hat sie alles immer nur für 'The Greater Good'
getan, ist klar. Aber sie sieht nicht eben gelangweilt
dabei aus. Und Subtexter, die die Serie kennen, wissen,
dass Gabrielle trotz allem immer ohne ernstzunehmende
Konkurrenz blieb. |

Lucy Lawless and Reneé O'Connor never stopped
emphasizing that being an actress means working in
a team and that Xena wouldn't be the sames if it wasn't
for the X:WP crew. Nonetheless, what would the show
be without the chemistry of these two actresses? The
question can't be answered because the show focussed
on the characters Xena and Gabrielle and only could
do this because of the actors' chemistry.
So this video is not about their characters, it's
about Lucy and Reneé: It's a loooong clip (5.44
min.) but hey, we have to cover 10 years, haven't
we? The video contains pics and short scenes.
The song is performed by a German fermale duo which
is also famous for the artist's great chemistry on
stage. Probably that's the reason why they chose to
sing the song "Freundinnen müsste man sein
(Being Girlfriends would be nice").
Warning:
I didn't subtitle the clip and think it's pretty boring
if you don't understand the lyrics. But for the hardcore
fans, here's a summary of the lyrics (but don't say
you haven't been warned).:

Lucy Lawless und Reneé O'Connor haben immer
betont, dass Schauspielerin zu sein bedeutet, in einem
Team zu arbeiten, und dass Xena nicht Xena wäre
ohne den Einsatz der gesamten Crew. Nichtsdestotrotz,
was wäre die Show ohne die Chemie der beiden
Schauspielerinnen? Die Frage ist nicht zu beantworten,
denn die Show basierte auf den beiden Charakteren
Xena und Gabrielle und konnte dies nur tun wegen der
Chemie zwischen den Hauptdarstellerinnen.
Dieses Video ist also nicht über Xena und Gabrielle,
es ist über Lucy und Reneé. Es ist endlos
laaaaaang (5.44 min.), aber schließlich gilt
es 10 Jahre abzudecken. Das Video enthält sowohl
Bilder als auch kleine Szenen.

gute Chemie auf der Bühne nachempfinden, wenn
nicht diese beiden?

although my heart doesn't agree to the ending. In

from history or mythology or from a famous movie.

I
wasn't sure if it makes sense to upload this video.
Maybe I'll be the only one who likes it - and maybe
it's impudent anyway to call this little piece a music
video. Actually you won't hear a song but rather a
poem framed in music. The text is an early poem by
Rainer Maria Rilke. Well, at least I can tell you
what I tried:
Some
people won't agree but to me 'Xena: The Warrior Princess'
is one of the most spiritual shows ever aired on TV.
The Gods are everywhere and in everything, everything
is close in the Xenaverse. One day you are a God,
the next you are mortal, or vice versa. One day you
are good, the next you are evil, one moment you are
an angel, the next you are a demon. You can be nailed
on a cross and five minutes later fight for the Greater
Good in Hell. You can die several times and return
from the death one episode later without making a
great deal of it. Several realities, several worlds,
several times - and everything melts into everything.
Times, cultures, bodies, lives.
The only dependable thing in this erratic world is
the love between our two heroes. It outlives everything,
it is imperturbable and unflinching and sometimes
their only orientation.
Unfortunately Rilke wrote his poem so early that an
official translation doesn't exist. I had to translate
it myself (sorry), it was a painful process since
Rilke can't be translated without losing the beauty
of his words. |

Ich
habe ja lange gezögert, ob ich dieses Video hochladen
soll. Vielleicht bin ich die einzige, die es mag -
und es ist eh etwas vermessen, es als Musikvdeo zu
bezeichnen. Vielmehr handelt sich um ein in Musik
eingebettetes Gedicht von Rainer Maria Rilke, das
dem Rilke-Projekt entnommen ist. Naja, wenigstens
kann ich mal erzählen, was ich versucht habe:
Manche
mögen mir widersprechen, aber aus meiner Sicht
ist 'Xena' eine der sprituellsten Shows, die je über
den Bildschirm geflimmert ist. Die Götter sind
überall und in allem, alles liegt dich beieinander
im Xenaverserse: Einen Tag bist du Gott, am nächsten
schon Mensch, oder umgekehrt. Einen Tag bist du gut,
am anderen böse, eine Minute bist du ein Engel
und in der nächsten schon ein Dämon. Du
kannst an Kreuz genagelt werden und fünf Minuten
später schon für in der Hölle für
das Gute kämpfen. Du kannst mehrfache qualvolle
Tod sterben und es gibt doch genügend Wege, mal
eben wieder ins Leben zurückzukehren, im Kampf
gegen das Böse. Mehrere Realitäten, mehrere
Welten und mehrere Zeiten - und alles verschmilzt
mit allem. Zeiten, Kulturen, Körper, Leben.
Der einzig verlässliche Faktor in dieser unberrechenbaren
Welt bleibt die Liebe zwischen unseren beiden Heldinnen.
Sie überdauert alles, ist unbeirrbar und unanfechtbar,
und sie ist manchmal die einzige Orientierung, die
ihnen bleibt.
